Roza Otunbayeva

Ok, so I started thinking about the topic and figuring out whom I should write about. Initially I wanted to write about one of the women in Polish politics. But then I thought "Hey, there are quite a few of them, it's not that bad after all" (which of course doesn't mean that I couldn't be better;). Thinking about Kyrgyzstan, where I happened to live for a while, I could not recall one female name connected with politics (and mind you I was there during the last presidential elections so politics was discussed quite often). So I started browsing the internet. And finally, when I was just about to give up I found a female politician:D
Her name is Roza Otunbayeva and she is currently a member of the so called Jogorku Kenesh- the Kyrgyz Parliament. She was the first and the only woman in the history of modern Kyrgyzstan to hold the post of the foreign minister. Moreover, she was one of the leaders of the Tulip Revolution, which led to overthrow of Kyrgyzstan's first president Askar Akayev. Probably the most fascinating thing about women like her is the fact that they have to be really strong personalities to be able to work in an environment reserved (and here I mean really reserved) for men.

  1. Thanks, this is very interesting. I was really surprised to learn that there are any women involved in politics in Kyrgyzstan.
BTW, I just discovered your other blog, and got totally immersed in it. I wish I had known about it earlier. Great stuff - congratulations! :)

  2. Thank you very much:) However, if I was to write it now, I think I'd be slightly less critical of Kyrgyztan. Oh, and as for the entry above it turns out that after the recent revolution Roza Otunbayeva is the head of the interim government. So I guess I had a good nose for picking her as the most important woman in their politics:D
